A Freshman who entered our school after studying at a Japanese Middle School: Fumiki Arioka

photo11

Mr. Arioka harbored ill feelings toward the Japanese school system, and when he stopped attending school in his second year of middle school, he decided to transfer to Amtrak Inter-Highschool because his father, a high school teacher in a traditional school, recommended this course of action to him. He continued to work at his part time job, thereby earning practical training course credit. With his other subjects, he could focus his instruction and learning around areas in which he was interested, i.e., religion and philosophy. Therefore, he created a curriculum related to those fields. During his final year, he transferred to Atmark Cosmopolitan High School, an affiliated school, and graduated. Following that, he successfully entered DOSHISHA University in Kyoto.

In the middle of his 12th grade year, he decided to return to Japan and transferred to Atmark Inter-Highschool. His main goal was to graduate from high school in three years and attend college with other students his age. He was able to transfer his credits from his high school experiences in Japan, Canada, and the US. Thus, he only needed to fulfill five more credits in order to graduate from Atmark. He enrolled in our "Special College Entry Course" and took the TOFL Institute's e-learning course, which applied to Atmark's graduation credits. Three teaching specialists, i.e., Atmark's personal learning coach, TOFL's an English teacher, and a college entry counselor, all helped Mr. Abe to graduate and enter a university.

Miss Ogasawara began studying classical ballet at age 8. After middle school, she decided to study ballet in New York. She also attended a local private high school where all academic subjects were taught in English even though this was not her mother language. While studying English to the best of her ability, she practiced ballet for six hours a day and reached the level of guest performer, was awarded prizes, and began dancing semi-professionally. However, her pursuit of ballet while continuing her academic studies overwhelmed her, and she became neurotic and had to come back to Japan during her 11th grade year. In Japan she enrolled in Atmark Inter-Highschool because she could create her own program of study with subjects that were directly related to her ballet activities. This flexible curriculum relieved her pressure and revived her enthusiasm for ballet again. By the year's end, she joined a ballet company in Germany as a professional dancer and also won fist place in the YAGP(Youth American Grand Prix) regional final in Japan.
